As a Virtual Assistant, my work spans many different tasks, from admin support and project coordination to social media scheduling and design help. So when I recently completed the Brand Design Foundations course on LinkedIn Learning, I wasn’t necessarily looking to become a graphic designer.
Instead, I was looking to strengthen my design awareness so I could better support my clients, and this course delivered.
What I Learned
The course covered the essentials of brand design, including:
Visual identity systems
Color psychology
Typography principles
Logo consistency
Design thinking across platforms
It helped me understand the why behind common brand choices and sharpened my eye for design details that matter, even in everyday Virtual Assistant tasks.
How I Apply It for Clients
Here’s how this course has already made a difference in my VA work:
1. Canva Content Creation
I now approach Canva tasks with a stronger visual strategy, ensuring brand colors are used consistently, spacing is balanced, and text styles match the brand’s voice. A well-designed graphic now takes less time and delivers more impact.
2. Brand Documentation
When organizing assets or building out brand folders, I’m more intentional about naming conventions, brand usage guidelines, and structure, helping clients maintain clarity and consistency across platforms.
3. Consistency Checks
I’ve become a go-to set of “fresh eyes” for brand materials. Whether it's a social media post, a presentation, or a newsletter, I can now spot inconsistencies that might otherwise go unnoticed and suggest small tweaks that elevate the final product.
You Don’t Need to Be a Designer to Think Like One
This course reminded me that design isn’t just how something looks, it’s how something works.
And in the world of Virtual Assistance, that mindset is a game-changer.
Whether you’re a fellow VA or a small business owner working with one, I highly recommend investing time in learning the basics of brand design. It’s a small step with big returns.
